ACA income limits for 2027

Who qualifies for the premium tax credit, Medicaid and cost-sharing reductions, by household size.

For 2027 Marketplace coverage, the premium tax credit is available to households earning 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level: $15,960 to $63,840 for one person and $33,000 to $132,000 for a family of four in the 48 contiguous states and DC. There is no credit above 400%. Anyone can still buy a plan at full price.

2027 coverage uses the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines and the 2027 IRS contribution percentages (IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26). Last updated October 2, 2026.

100% is the floor for the premium tax credit, 138% the usual Medicaid line in expansion states, 150%, 200% and 250% the cost-sharing reduction tiers, and 400% the ceiling for the credit.

What you pay for the benchmark Silver plan in 2027

The credit caps what you pay for the second-lowest-cost Silver plan in your area at a share of income. If that plan costs more, the credit pays the difference, and you can spend the credit on any metal tier.

Cost-sharing reductions: up to 250%

Below 250% of the poverty level ($39,900 for one person, $82,500 for a family of four), a Silver plan comes with lower deductibles and copays. The help is largest at the bottom: Silver plans cover about 94% of costs on average up to 150%, 87% from 150% to 200%, and 73% from 200% to 250%, against 70% for a standard Silver plan. It only applies to Silver plans.

Medicaid and the coverage gap

In the 40 states and DC that expanded Medicaid, adults with income up to 138% of the poverty level ($22,025 for one person) usually qualify for Medicaid instead of the credit, and can apply any time of year. In the 10 states that have not expanded it (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, Wyoming), adults below 100% can fall into a coverage gap, earning too much for Medicaid there and too little for the credit. Wisconsin is the exception: its Medicaid program covers adults up to 100%.

States that add their own help

These states pay extra help or run their own low-cost coverage on top of the federal limits above. Each was checked on the program's official site on October 2, 2026.

Questions about 2027 ACA income limits

What is the income limit for Marketplace insurance in 2027?

Anyone can buy a Marketplace plan; there is no income limit to enroll. The limit applies to the premium tax credit: for 2027 coverage, household income must be between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, which is $15,960 to $63,840 for one person in the 48 contiguous states and DC. Above 400% there is no credit, because the enhanced rules that removed that cap expired after 2025.

What are the 2027 ACA income limits for a family of 2, 3 and 4?

For 2027 coverage in the 48 contiguous states and DC: a household of 2 qualifies for the premium tax credit from $21,640 to $86,560, a household of 3 from $27,320 to $109,280, and a family of 4 from $33,000 to $132,000.

Can I get a subsidy if my income is over 400% of the poverty level in 2027?

Not from the federal government. Since 2026 the premium tax credit stops at 400% of the poverty level ($63,840 for one person, $132,000 for a family of 4). A few states pay their own help above that line, for example New Jersey Health Plan Savings up to 600%.

What is the minimum income to qualify for an ACA subsidy?

100% of the poverty level: $15,960 for one person in 2027 coverage. In the states that expanded Medicaid, adults under 138% ($22,025 for one person) usually get Medicaid instead. In states that did not expand it, adults under 100% can fall into a coverage gap with neither.

Which poverty guidelines apply to 2027 coverage?

The 2026 HHS poverty guidelines. Marketplace subsidies for a plan year use the guidelines in effect when that year's open enrollment starts, so 2027 plans use the 2026 figures: $15,960 for one person plus $5,680 for each additional person.

What income counts for ACA subsidies?

Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) for everyone in your tax household: your adjusted gross income from the federal tax return, plus any untaxed foreign income, non-taxable Social Security benefits and tax-exempt interest. It is your expected income for the year of coverage, not last year's.

Are the ACA income limits different in Alaska and Hawaii?

Yes, both use higher poverty guidelines. For 2027 coverage the premium tax credit runs from $19,950 to $79,800 for one person in Alaska and $18,360 to $73,440 in Hawaii.
